The Galleri test is done through a simple blood draw and can detect more than 50 types of cancer in the earliest stages. It works by detecting fragments of DNA in the blood that have been “shed” by cancer cells. Fasting is not required.

Test Eligibility

Active and retired SFFD firefighters and EMTs who are age 35+ with 5+ years of service in the San Francisco Fire Department are eligible.

Those within the inclusion criteria will have the cost covered by SFFCPF. Those outside the criteria – active members, spouses and family members – may participate and will be charged the reduced SFFD member test cost of $649 (market price $949).

To SFFD Members with Cancer or in Remission less than 3 years:

** Members with cancer: If you have confirmed cancer, the Galleri test will likely detect that cancer and give a positive result. Galleri’s ability to detect multiple primary cancers in the blood has not yet been studied, therefore we cannot recommend that it be used for this purpose.

** Members in remission less than 3 years: Grail recommends that a patient is 3 years out from active treatment before using Galleri to detect a new primary cancer. The Galleri test works by detecting a “cancer signal” in the blood. The amount of time the “signal” remains in the blood varies per cancer and per person. We don’t want to detect old DNA and cause unnecessary alarm.
