In a recent report by the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), commissioned by the Fire Brigades Union (FBU), the serious health risks that UK firefighters face following exposure to chemicals emitted during a fire is revealed. A few of the major points found in this report are:

  • 4.1% of surveyed serving firefighters have been diagnosed with cancer, compared with less than 1% of the general population
  • Firefighters should undergo regular health screening to detect early changes that could lead to cancers and other illnesses related to their work
  • Call to HSE and fire services to take measures to keep firefighters safe from cancer and other illnesses
